H. L. Hunley, the first submarine to be used as an instrument of war during the U.S. Civil War, was lost at sea on February 17, 1864, just after successfully delivering an explosive charge that sunk the Union warship Housatonic as she patroled the waters off Sullivans Island and the harbor of Charleston, SC. All hands were lost along with the submarine until their recovery during August 2000.
The Hunley is now part of a ten-year restoration project to preserve this incredible national treasure. The restoration efforts are being directed by an international team of scientists in a specially constructed laboratory located at the former Charleston Naval Shipyard. W. R. Riggs & Associates, Inc., as a “Friends Of The Hunley” contributor, was instrumental in the design and installation of the supervisory control and data acquisition system that monitors and controls water quality in the submersion tank where the Hunley is being restored.
